They’re VERY pretty and printed beautifully. The design flourishes on the cover, sprayed edges, and end papers make this a book that just calls out to you from across the room. The colors printed so well, they’re vibrant and soft in equal measure, and the whole vibe of the book is unmistakable. Juni and Aditya really made a masterpiece here.

We’d like to take this opportunity to call out Goats Flying Press’ Head of Production and Design Jeff Powell who not only designed our publisher’s logo, but also handled design of the Erlking book, and that includes hand-lettering the credits!

We’re of a mind to ask him to write a future column about that process, and what inspired him to take this extra step. This goes above and beyond and so immediately imbues the book with a life that is unmistakable.

You’ll see what we mean when you hold the book in your hands, which, if all goes well, will be right on schedule in April!

What Are 'the Odds?

NOTE: Please put on your serious face for a moment…

While we try to keep things light on here we are not goats to beat around the bush and if you’ve made it through 2025 until now chances are you’ve been through a fire-hose of news and global developments that may not fill you with the most sunny disposition on the remaining 300-some days of year and beyond.

We are no different. And while we realize that no one subscribes to a free newsletter of a goat-themed comic book publisher looking for nuanced insights into geopolitical developments we can, at the very least, engage in the kind of creative action that has a long history of helping get people through times when the writing on the wall is just Swastikas:

Editorial cartoons and fiery diatribes!

This custom commissioned Goat of the Month comes to us from Łukasz Kowalczuk, a Polish cartoonist and illustrator with steel in his gut and fire in his heart, who delivered exactly the energy we wanted to convey: Zero hesitation. Zero tolerance for intolerance. Just action. Fascism is best faced with gritted teeth and a swift kicks in the ass.

Things are changing faster around us than anyone can absorb, and while we can’t promise much we can promise this:

Exactly 0% of our work, the stories we want to tell, our commitment to our artists, our readers, and the way we do things will change just because the ghouls are running amuck once again, and we don’t feel a particular need to be subtle about it.

We will never act or not act out of fear. We’ll be here with horns and hooves at the ready for dead-eyed goose-steppers to break upon us.

We love this guy. Incredible vigor and a lust for life. Gyrocopter Goat is truly our champion of February and we hope his full-throated laughter is infectious.

Łukasz’s work is full of energy like this. He is a prolific and multi-talented cartoonist, designer, and illustrator, whose every line and panel reverberates with the force of an artist who gives himself fully to every project.

Along with his own comics he is a frequent contributor to MÖRK BORG, a fantasy RPG project, perfect for people who want to get into the fun of pen and paper role playing but perhaps prefer the melodies of Motörhead to those from an elven lute. Definitely our kinda people!

A little follow-up on last month’s column where I took a heart and stepped into the year with the ambition to write a bit about the whole mystical, magical energy that surrounds making comics for me. It was not something I had long planned to do, truly a spur of the moment kind of thing but I’m glad I did it, as quite a few of you reached out to express you liking the piece and it giving you a bit of energy. Just to make a connection like that was exactly my intention.

Imagine my surprise when just a day or so after the last newsletter went out Coozilpm, the artist of the goat commission I wrote about in that column, DMed me to say someone had already purchased the original drawing from him! I was happy for him. But then, a week or so later, I received an email from the buyer of that piece, who reached out to let me know that the column inspired her to reach out to Coozilmpm and purchase that Goat, and she even sent me a photo of the letter he sent her! I received her and Coozils’s permission to show it off here:

I think it’s just neat and it was such a little micro-moment of what I want to do here at Goats Flying Press: Take a heart to share a bit more about why I love doing this, what it means to me, and maybe it will mean something to you too.

And to see that it set in motion a chain of events that got an artist paid (yay!) a cool piece of art up on a wall (double yay!) and most importantly of all helped will this frog into existence!

I love him. Seeing this little speedo butt alone made the entire effort worth it to me already.

To that end, I feel like the existence of this little column has already been vindicated, and I’ll continue to write about comics, life, and love (psst, they’re all the same thing!) in many more columns to come in the hopes of putting a little more light and cartoon goat (and toad!) energy into the world.

That’s all from this month. We’ve barely scratched the surface of what we have cooking for this year. With The Erlking well on its way to fulfillment, it’s time to set our sights on what comes next…and that’s a comic that will make the rivers run red…and yellow, but mostly red.
